Hurricane IOTA

Colombia: The aftermath

The Caribbean islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina (Colombia) were almost completely destroyed within 7 hours on the night of November 17th, 2020. The wind razed 1,700 buildings to the ground. 6,000 people are affected. There were some deaths and subsequent deaths. Many people survived Hurricane IOTA in the bathroom because the walls are traditionally held together with an iron ring. We too, Claudia and Alberto with our 3 dogs and a cat, stayed huddled together for 13 hours. We are UN recognized victims of a natural disaster (UN-UNGRD 1350/ Colombia).

A year after the hurricane, many families are still living in tents, some without electricity. Even two years later, neither the hospital nor the small airport has been repaired. Some families continue to live in tents. Due to corruption and the more difficult logistical conditions caused by the island location, a lot of official aid is delayed or disappears. In October 2022, Hurricane JULIA of magnitude 1 sweeps away newly built roofs. With a small donation you can directly help the islanders with the reconstruction. For only 50€ Climate Future buys urgently needed building materials in Colombia. We have already been able to implement a small solar energy project in a school. The founder of the foundation lives on site.

Many thanks on behalf of all those affected.
